Madame Web Star Physical Training for the Spider-Man Spinoff

Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney details the intense physical training she is undergoing for the Spider-Man spinoff movie's fight scenes. The actress first rose to prominence for small roles in television shows like Netflix's Everything Sucks!, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, and HBO's Sharp Objects. Now, Sweeney is best known for her roles in two HBO series, Euphoria and The White Lotus, for which she received rare double Emmy nominations in 2022.

The upcoming superhero movie Madame Web will be quite a different undertaking for the young actress who has typically starred in slow-burn television dramas. After the success of Tom Hardy's Venom in 2018, Sony began fleshing out its Spider-Man universe with more installments, including a Venom sequel in 2021 and Jared Leto's box-office bomb, Morbius, earlier this year. Future entries include Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter. Dakota Johnson will play the title role in Madame Web, and the cast also includes Adam Scott, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, and Mike Epps, all in undisclosed roles.

During a recent interview with THR, Sweeney opened up about the intense physical training she is undergoing for Madame Web. According to the publication, Sweeney is preparing for her role with "fight training, movement training, and Reformacore Pilates." Sweeney also teased some details about her character, saying she was drawn to the Spider-Man spinoff film because she “liked the personal struggles that the character goes through.”

While her Madame Web role is currently undisclosed, Sweeney's intense physical training implies her character will be heavily involved in the film's fight scenes, rather than someone who is regulated to watching from the sidelines. Immediately after her Madame Web casting, some started speculating Sweeney is playing Black Cat. If not Felicia Hardy, Sweeney could also be playing the first live-action version of Spider-Gwen or Charlotte Witter, the latter having a direct connection to Madame Web as her granddaughter in the comics.

With Madame Web currently in production from director S.J. Clarkson, hopefully, it won't be long until audiences see Sweeney showing off her fighting skills which she trained so hard for. Madame Web set videos and photos have revealed looks at Johnson and Scott's characters, though Sweeney has not yet been spotted on the set of the highly-secretive Spider-Man spinoff. With Madame Web set for an October 2023 release, it may be a while until viewers see Sweeney in action. With any luck, the actress will reveal more details about her training and preparation for the role to tide people over in the interim.
