Tessa Thompson Fan Confused Over Valkyrie Being Asgard's King in Thor: Love and Thunder

Valkyrie actor Tessa Thompson offered some insight as to what kind of ruler her character is and how she ended up going by "king" as the leader of the Asgardians, instead of a different royal title, in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

In an interview with Total Film, Thompson opened up about Valkryie's new title and path. "She's a kind king," Thompson explained. "I know there's been some confusion on the internet in terms of the gendering with her being king. The truth is, that's the job that Thor was going to do, and then he just gave her the job, and we just didn't bother to change the title, because the title is 'king', and she's like, 'Well, I can be king.' The suits that she wears – we thought it was sort of a fun nod to Frida Kahlo."

Thompson also said that Valkryie enjoys her new role as king, if not all aspects of ruling. "She likes it," the actor said. "She feels slightly less enchanted with the bureaucratic elements of New Asgard. It's really been put on the map by the events that have happened in past movies, so it's also become this sort of tourist destination. I think she feels entirely proud. The thing about Asgard that's always been true is, it's not a place, it's its people."

The last comment is a nod to Odin's line to his son in the third film of the franchise, Thor: Ragnarok. In a vision near the film's climax when Thor is feeling hopeless in his fight against his evil sister Hela after she has taken Asgard and destroyed Thor's hammer Mjolnir, the All-Father tells the god of thunder, "Asgard isn’t a place. Never was. This could be Asgard. Asgard is where our people stand."

Taika Waititi has also revealed that in Love and Thunder Valkyrie will be chafing a bit at the more bureaucratic duties of being a king. "She's got to do all the things that they never tell you about when you're supposed to rule the people, which is deal with all of the infrastructure and figure out the economy and have delegates visit from other countries," Waititi said in an interview. "So, she's spending a lot of her time not fighting, and all of her new battles have to do with ruling her people."

An early leak of Valkyrie's title of king, along with the Kahlo-inspired suit, came from images of Hasbro's line of Marvel Legend action figures for Love and Thunder. The photoes showed King Valkyrie, Ravager Thor, Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor and even two Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord and Groot.

Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters July 8, 2022.
