Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum have a blast Acting in Movie The Lost City

If the chaos of the Oscars spotlit troubled Hollywood psyches, the same pressure often shows up on screen, anxiety an inch under the surface of even throwaway movies.

The charm of escapist action comedy The Lost City therefore lies in the sheer carefree air of stars Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, two highly skilled professionals clearly having a blast channelling — of all things — the 1984 adventure Romancing the Stone. Bullock is the bestselling novelist whose high-end ambitions vanished on becoming “word writer” of lucrative romances; Tatum is their regular cover model. For each actor, the movie plays out in the sweet spot where being a sincere good sport meets a canny tweak of a much-loved image.

Bullock spends the film in a glittering pink onesie. For Tatum, there are unrequited passions and leeches. The latter appear once the movie (directed by Adam Nee and Aaron Nee) has conspired to deliver the stars into mortal danger in a tropical outpost.

More surprising is that for most of the first hour, they also get a flurry of genuinely excellent gags. The movie proves front-loaded; the jokes thin out. But that first half is a riot, screwball set to a delightfully skewed rhythm, Bullock the sequinned straight man to Tatum’s neurotic himbo.

His mangled wordplay almost suggests the writers have been studying the Marx Brothers. “You can have your cake and get what you want,” he earnestly insists, a sentiment we should surely all remember.
